History:
The French Navy’s helicopter cruiser Jeanne d’Arc was commissioned in 1964, serving as both a training ship and a versatile platform for various naval operations. Originally designed as an anti-submarine warfare vessel, she featured a large flight deck and hangar capable of supporting multiple helicopters, including the Alouette III and Super Frelon. Measuring 182 meters in length with a beam of 24 meters, Jeanne d’Arc was powered by two turbine engines producing 40,000 horsepower, allowing a maximum speed of 26.5 knots and a range of over 10,000 kilometers. Armed with four 100mm guns and six MM38 Exocet missile launchers, she combined offensive capabilities with her primary role in training naval officers. Throughout her service, Jeanne d’Arc participated in numerous international missions and goodwill tours, symbolising France’s naval presence worldwide. After decades of service, she was decommissioned in 2010, leaving a legacy as a unique and adaptable vessel in the French fleet.
