History

The Mitsubishi A6M Zero, officially designated Type 0 Carrier Fighter, entered service in 1940 and quickly established air superiority across the Pacific during the early stages of World War II. With unmatched manoeuvrability, long range, and formidable agility, the Zero dominated Allied fighters until new designs began to counter its advantages. The A6M2b Model 21 was the primary variant in service during the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway. At Midway in June 1942, Zero pilots fought fiercely to protect the Japanese carrier fleet, but overwhelming US carrier-based air power inflicted devastating losses, resulting in the destruction of four Japanese carriers. This battle marked the turning point of the Pacific War, where the Zero’s supremacy began to decline in the face of advancing Allied aircraft and tactics. Nevertheless, the Zero remains one of the most iconic aircraft of WWII and a symbol of Japanese naval aviation.
