History:
The North American P-51D Mustang is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of World War II. Originally designed as a long-range escort fighter, the Mustang combined excellent speed, range, and manoeuvrability with heavy armament, typically six .50 calibre machine guns. The D variant introduced a bubble canopy for improved visibility and was extensively used in bomber escort missions over Europe, significantly reducing Allied bomber losses. It also excelled in ground-attack roles, striking enemy transport and supply lines. The Mustang’s role in gaining air superiority was vital, ensuring the success of Allied strategic bombing campaigns and paving the way for victory in Europe.
