History:

The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, developed by the famed Skunk Works under Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, entered service in the 1960s as the world’s fastest and highest-flying reconnaissance aircraft. Capable of sustained speeds over Mach 3 and altitudes above 85,000 feet, it was virtually untouchable by enemy defences. The Blackbird’s titanium construction and advanced design allowed it to outpace threats by simply flying higher and faster. Operated primarily by the U.S. Air Force’s 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, the SR-71 played a vital role during the Cold War, conducting intelligence missions across the globe. Retired in the 1990s, several examples are preserved in museums, remaining symbols of aviation innovation and technological achievement.
