Academy USS Bunker Hill 1991 1/700 Scale Model Kit
The Academy USS Bunker Hill 1991 is a 1/700 scale plastic model kit of the US Navy’s Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser CG-52. Representing the ship during the 1991 Gulf War period, this Academy release is based on Flyhawk tooling and includes six sprues, alternative full hull and waterline construction options, and a display stand.
USS Bunker Hill was an important development in the US Navy’s guided missile cruiser fleet, becoming the first American cruiser equipped with the Mk 41 Vertical Launch System. Her combination of the Aegis combat system and guided missile armament made her a significant part of the Navy’s surface combat capability.
USS Bunker Hill (CG-52)
Commissioned in 1986, USS Bunker Hill was a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser designed for a range of naval operations. Equipped with the Aegis combat system, she carried Standard surface-to-air missiles for air defence and Tomahawk cruise missiles for long-range strike missions.
The ship was particularly notable for introducing the Mk 41 Vertical Launch System to the US Navy cruiser fleet. This system provided a different approach to missile deployment and became a defining feature of later American surface combatants.
During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, USS Bunker Hill served in the Persian Gulf. She subsequently undertook deployments across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, remaining in frontline US Navy service until her decommissioning in 2023.
Kit Features and Contents
Academy’s 1/700 scale release uses Flyhawk tooling and provides two hull construction options, allowing the finished cruiser to be displayed either as a complete ship model or in a waterline configuration.
- 1/700 scale USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) plastic model kit.
- Represents the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser in 1991.
- Academy release based on Flyhawk tooling.
- Six sprues of plastic model components.
- Full hull construction option.
- Alternative waterline hull configuration.
- Display stand included.
Full Hull or Waterline Display
The choice of hull configuration is a useful feature for naval modellers. The full hull option allows USS Bunker Hill to be presented as a complete ship model on the supplied display stand, while the waterline alternative is suited to a sea-level presentation.
Both configurations represent the same 1991 subject, giving the modeller flexibility in how the completed cruiser is displayed. The 1/700 scale also makes the ship suitable for display alongside other naval vessels modelled to the same scale.
Assembly and Finishing
This is an unassembled plastic model kit requiring paint and glue. The six sprues provide the components for constructing USS Bunker Hill, with the choice of full hull or waterline assembly made during construction.
