British Royal Air Force F-4J(UK) Phantom II “74(F) Tiger Squadron” (1/72)

The F-4J Phantom II was an upgraded variant of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom fighter, originally used by the US Navy and Marine Corps. It featured improved radar, updated avionics, and enhanced engines, making it highly effective in both air to air and ground attack roles. Known for its versatility and powerful twin engine performance, the F-4J could serve in fleet air defence, close air support, and reconnaissance missions.

In the mid 1980s the Royal Air Force acquired fifteen refurbished F-4Js to offset the deployment of RAF Phantoms to the Falklands. Designated F-4J(UK), these aircraft were allocated to RAF 74 (Fighter) Squadron, the “Tiger Squadron”, based at RAF Wattisham. Modified to meet RAF operational needs and adorned with the squadron’s distinctive tiger insignia, they served from 1985 until 1991 before being replaced by the Tornado F3. Despite their short service life, the F-4J(UK) Phantoms provided vital air defence capability during a key transitional period.

This kit has been made possible with the assistance of the British Phantom Aviation Group, who allowed access to airframe ZE360 currently under restoration, and the Imperial War Museum Duxford for access to ZE359 restored to full US Navy condition.
