History
The Sea King entered British service after Westland Helicopters began licensed production of the American designed aircraft, eventually building more than 300 examples. While only a portion of these served in the Search and Rescue role, those that did became some of the most visible and well known aircraft in Britain.
Designated HAR.3, the Royal Air Force Search and Rescue Sea Kings were equipped with advanced navigation and search systems, allowing them to operate day or night and in the most challenging weather conditions. Their stability, endurance and lifting capability made them ideally suited to rescue operations across the United Kingdom and surrounding waters.
Constantly on standby, the bright yellow Sea Kings became a reassuring sight in times of crisis. Crews carried out countless life saving missions, earning immense public respect and affection. The Sea King’s long service and humanitarian role ensured its place as one of the most iconic and best loved aircraft ever to fly in British skies.
