History:

The heavy cruiser Atago was the lead ship of the Takao-class cruisers, commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1932. Designed as fast, heavily armed warships, the Takao-class featured ten 8-inch guns, powerful torpedo batteries, and a distinctive bridge structure. By 1942, Atago was heavily involved in the Pacific War, playing a key role in the Solomon Islands campaign. She supported Japanese operations at Guadalcanal, providing firepower and escort duties during critical naval engagements. As flagship of Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita, Atago later participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where she was sunk by U.S. submarines in October 1944. Her service highlights the strategic importance of heavy cruisers in Japan’s wartime fleet and their central role in the fierce battles of the Pacific theatre.
