History:

The Merkava Mk.2 was a key evolution of Israel’s indigenous tank programme, following the original Merkava’s deployment in the late 1970s. Entering service in the early 1980s, the Mk.2 featured enhanced armour, advanced night vision, and fire control systems designed to improve effectiveness in asymmetrical and close-quarters combat. Uniquely, its engine is front-mounted to provide additional crew protection, while the rear compartment allows space for infantry or casualty evacuation.
