History

The Royal Flying Corps (RFC), established in 1912, served as Britain’s air arm during the early years of World War I until its merger with the Royal Naval Air Service in 1918 to form the Royal Air Force. RFC pilots flew a wide range of aircraft, including the BE.2, Sopwith Pup, and SE.5a, undertaking reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and combat missions over the Western Front. Flying conditions were often harsh, with open cockpits exposing pilots to cold, wind, and enemy fire. Their uniforms typically featured leather flying jackets, sheepskin lining, goggles, and scarves to provide some protection during long missions.
