History

The Russian Maxim machine gun, officially adopted in 1910, was a water-cooled, belt-fed weapon based on Hiram Maxim’s original design. It became a mainstay of the Imperial Russian Army during World War I, mounted on wheeled Sokolov carriages and used extensively in defensive and offensive operations. Ammunition was stored in sturdy wooden and metal boxes, each holding cloth belts of cartridges ready for rapid deployment.
