History
The Royal Flying Corps, established in 1912, was the air arm of the British Army during the early years of World War I. RFC pilots flew a wide range of missions, from reconnaissance and artillery spotting to air combat and ground attack. Known for their courage and resilience, these aviators often formed strong bonds with their aircraft and ground crew. The image of a pilot standing casually beside his machine reflects both the camaraderie and the confidence that characterised the RFC before its merger with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the Royal Air Force in 1918.
