History:
During the 1960s and 70s, bustling street markets were a defining feature of daily life in cities across South Vietnam, especially in Saigon. Local vendors operated stalls filled with tropical fruits, leafy greens, root vegetables, and spices. These stalls were often family-run, passed down through generations, and served as vital hubs for the community’s food supply and social interaction.
Markets were characterised by their woven baskets, wooden crates, and colourful displays laid out under makeshift canvas awnings or bamboo frames. Against the backdrop of wartime upheaval, these markets remained remarkably resilient and culturally vibrant, embodying the everyday rhythm of Vietnamese life.
