This 1/48 scale plastic model kit from Hasegawa represents the Mitsubishi F-2B in special 70th Anniversary markings of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The F-2 is a modern multirole fighter developed jointly by Japan and the United States, based on the F-16 but incorporating a larger wing and advanced avionics tailored to JASDF requirements.

Based on the PT29 tooling, this release contains 185 parts and captures the distinctive lines of the two-seat F-2B variant. The enlarged wing, sleek fuselage, and detailed cockpit configuration are faithfully reproduced, along with finely engraved surface detail. When completed, the model measures approximately 328mm in length with a wingspan of 244mm, making it a striking display piece in 1/48 scale.

History

The Mitsubishi F-2 entered service with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in the early 2000s as a domestically enhanced derivative of the F-16. Designed for maritime strike and air defence roles, it features a larger composite wing and advanced radar systems.

This edition commemorates the 70th Anniversary of the 3rd Squadron under the 7th Air Wing, based at Hyakuri Air Base. Special anniversary schemes such as this highlight the proud operational heritage and modern capabilities of Japan’s air defence forces.
