This 1/72 scale plastic model kit from Hasegawa represents the F-4EJ Kai Phantom II of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force 302nd Squadron in its dramatic “Black Phantom” final year markings. The aircraft commemorates the retirement period of the F-4 from frontline JASDF service.

Based on the E37 tooling, this release contains 117 parts and accurately captures the distinctive twin-engine layout, anhedral tailplanes, and characteristic intake design of the Phantom II. The upgraded F-4EJ Kai configuration is faithfully reproduced, along with the striking all-black special scheme applied during its final operational year. When completed, the model measures approximately 265mm in length with a wingspan of 163mm.

History

The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II served with numerous air forces worldwide. In Japan, the F-4EJ and later F-4EJ Kai variants formed a core part of the nation’s air defence network for decades.

The 302nd Squadron, based at Hyakuri Air Base, operated the Phantom for many years. The “Black Phantom” scheme marked the type’s final operational period with the squadron in 2018 to 2019, celebrating the end of an era for one of Japan’s most iconic jet fighters.
