History

The Grumman F6F Hellcat entered service with the United States Navy in 1943 and quickly established itself as the dominant Allied carrier-based fighter in the Pacific Theatre. Developed specifically to counter the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, the Hellcat combined exceptional durability, heavy firepower and excellent flying characteristics. The F6F-3 became the first major production version and operated extensively from fleet carriers including USS Essex, participating in many of the decisive naval battles of the Pacific War. By the end of the conflict, Hellcat pilots had achieved more than 5,000 aerial victories, making it one of the most successful naval fighter aircraft in history.
