The Hasegawa Kawasaki Ki-61-I Hien 244th Fighter Group is a highly detailed 1/48 scale plastic model kit of one of Japan’s most distinctive fighter aircraft of the Second World War. Known to the Allies by the reporting name “Tony”, the Ki-61 stood apart from most Japanese fighters thanks to its streamlined liquid-cooled inline engine, giving it an appearance more commonly associated with European aircraft.

History

The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien entered service with the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force in 1943 and was one of the few Japanese fighters powered by a liquid-cooled inline engine. Its speed, diving performance and heavy armament made it a formidable opponent for Allied aircraft. The 244th Fighter Group became one of Japan’s best-known home defence units, operating the Ki-61 in the defence of Tokyo against American B-29 Superfortress bombing raids during the closing stages of the Second World War. Pilots of the unit became renowned for their determination and bravery, making the Ki-61 Hien an enduring symbol of Japan’s wartime aviation history.
