History

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most advanced fighters of the Second World War, featuring a distinctive twin-boom design and twin Allison V-1710 engines that provided exceptional speed, range and firepower. The improved P-38J variant introduced enhanced cooling systems and increased performance, making it one of the most capable long-range escort and fighter aircraft of the conflict. P-38s served extensively in both the European and Pacific theatres, where they excelled in bomber escort, reconnaissance, ground attack and air superiority missions. Famous pilots such as Richard Bong and Thomas McGuire achieved many of their victories flying the Lightning, securing its place as one of America’s most iconic wartime aircraft.
