ICM Plastic Model Kit

Sikorsky CH-54A Tarhe U.S. Heavy Lift Helicopter (1/72)

This 1/72 scale Sikorsky CH-54A Tarhe from ICM represents one of the most distinctive heavy-lift helicopters ever developed. Designed for transporting oversized cargo, the Tarhe’s open-frame structure and powerful lifting capability made it instantly recognisable. This kit captures the unique skeletal design, exposing key structural and mechanical elements that set it apart from conventional helicopters.

As part of a collection of 1/72 aircraft kits, this model offers a detailed and technically interesting build. The helicopter’s transmission system, cargo winches, and landing gear are all carefully reproduced, while surface detailing such as rivets adds further realism. The kit also allows for configuration choices, including optional engine air filters and different landing gear setups, along with multiple marking options covering different periods of service.

History

The Sikorsky CH-54A Tarhe was developed in the early 1960s as a heavy-lift helicopter capable of transporting large and bulky loads that could not be carried internally by conventional aircraft. Based on the earlier S-64 prototype, the helicopter entered service with the United States Army and quickly proved its value in demanding operational environments.

During the Vietnam War, the CH-54A was extensively used to transport artillery, vehicles, and supplies to remote locations. Its powerful lifting capability allowed it to carry loads externally using a winch system, enabling it to operate without landing in difficult terrain. This capability also made it highly effective in recovering downed aircraft, a role in which it excelled.

The helicopter’s distinctive open-frame design reduced weight while allowing it to carry oversized cargo beneath its fuselage. This unconventional approach made it one of the most capable heavy-lift helicopters of its time. In addition to transport and recovery missions, it was also used for specialised tasks such as clearing landing zones by dropping heavy loads.

Following its service in Vietnam, the CH-54 continued to operate with U.S. Army and National Guard units for several decades. Its legacy remains closely tied to its unique design and exceptional lifting performance, marking it as a significant development in rotary-wing aviation.
