History
German assault units, known as Sturmtruppen, were developed during the First World War as a response to the static and heavily fortified nature of trench warfare. First introduced during battles such as Verdun, these units were trained to bypass strongpoints and attack vulnerable sections of enemy lines using speed and surprise.
Initially formed as small teams, assault units quickly proved effective and were expanded into larger formations within German divisions. By the later stages of the war, many divisions included dedicated assault battalions equipped with a range of specialised weapons, including grenades, light mortars, flamethrowers, and infantry guns. Their tactics focused on infiltration, avoiding direct confrontation where possible and instead targeting key positions behind the front line.
These troops often operated in extremely dangerous conditions, including environments where chemical weapons were used. Gas attacks became a significant factor in trench warfare, leading to the widespread use of gas masks and protective equipment. Despite the risks, Sturmtruppen played a key role in several offensives, particularly during the final year of the war.
The development of assault units marked an important shift in military tactics, moving away from rigid formations towards more flexible and dynamic approaches. Their influence can be seen in later developments in infantry tactics, highlighting their significance in the evolution of modern warfare.
