History
The Marder infantry fighting vehicle was developed by Rheinmetall to accompany Leopard 1 tanks in German armoured formations from the 1970s onward. Renowned for its reliability and battlefield survivability, the Marder underwent a series of upgrades over its service life. The A3 programme, introduced in 1988, provided the vehicle with enhanced armour, improved suspension, and upgraded systems to meet the demands of modern combat. More than 2,000 Marders were produced in total, and while gradually being replaced by the Puma IFV in German service, many A3 models have remained in operation. In 2023, Germany began supplying Ukraine with Marder 1A3s, providing a boost to the country’s mechanised infantry. By 2024, nearly 200 had been delivered, primarily equipping Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces. These vehicles quickly proved themselves valuable assets, combining strong protection and firepower to support infantry operations in modern conflicts.
