History:

The Panhard 178 was introduced in 1934 as a modern reconnaissance vehicle for the French cavalry. With its rear-mounted engine, four-wheel drive, and 25 mm anti-tank gun, it quickly earned a reputation as one of the best armoured cars of its time. By the fall of France in June 1940, over 500 had been produced. Approximately 190 vehicles were captured and pressed into service by the Germans, with further units built under occupation. Redesignated as the Panzerspähwagen P204(f), many were adapted into command vehicles, equipped with powerful radios and distinctive Hochantenne aerials. These “Funk” versions served throughout the war, particularly on the Eastern Front and in occupied territories, providing vital communications for German armoured formations. Their origins as one of the finest pre-war armoured cars made them a valuable addition to the Wehrmacht’s reconnaissance and command units.
