The Army Painter Historical: WWII Imperial Japanese Combo is a collection of 20 paints developed for recreating the uniforms, equipment, weapons and skin tones of Imperial Japanese forces during the Second World War. The palette covers subjects associated with operations across mainland Asia and the Pacific islands.

Designed in collaboration with WWII historian Dr Stephen Bull, the set is grounded in historical research. It combines standard acrylic colours, metallic paints and washes, providing the principal paint types required to complete infantry figures and their equipment from base colours through to metallic details and final shading.

Eleven brand-new Warpaints Historical colours are included alongside established shades from The Army Painter range. Coordinated Imperial Khaki and Mustard Khaki groups provide dark, mid and light tones for layered painting, while dedicated colours cover helmets, webbing, weapons, insignia, skin and equipment.

Using the Colour Palette

The three Imperial Khaki shades and three Mustard Khaki shades form coordinated dark, mid and light sequences. These can be used to build shadows and highlights while maintaining a consistent appearance across a unit. Hanpu Beige, Helmet Brown and Meisai Green extend the selection for uniforms, headgear and equipment.

Rifle Brown and Kawa Brown provide complementary tones for wooden weapons, leather and smaller details. Matt Black, Matt White and Imperial Red can be used for equipment, insignia and colour adjustment. Senshi Skin provides a dedicated flesh colour, supported by Warm Skin Tone for shading and definition.

Steel and Shin Gunto Gold provide contrasting metallic finishes for weapons, blades and fittings. Black Tone and Brown Tone can be applied to recessed areas to increase definition and bring out sculpted detail, helping unify the completed miniature with the historically researched base colours.

History

Imperial Japanese forces served across a wide range of environments during the Second World War, from mainland Asian regions to tropical Pacific islands. Variations in uniforms, equipment and field conditions make a coordinated selection of khaki, green, brown and neutral shades particularly useful when painting infantry units from different campaigns and locations.
