The Italeri AB.205 / UH-1D “SAR” Search & Rescue Helicopter is a detailed 1/48 scale model kit of one of the most widely recognised and successful utility helicopters ever built. Produced under licence in Italy by Agusta, the AB.205 was derived from the famous Bell UH-1 Iroquois, better known around the world as the “Huey”. Renowned for its reliability, versatility and rugged construction, the helicopter became a vital asset in both military and civilian service.

The AB.205 was designed to provide rapid transportation of personnel and equipment, particularly in areas where access by conventional vehicles was difficult or impossible. Its spacious cabin, dependable performance and ability to operate in challenging environments allowed it to perform a wide variety of missions. Over time the helicopter proved equally capable in troop transport, cargo operations, medical evacuation, disaster relief and search and rescue duties.

This Italeri kit focuses on the Search and Rescue configuration and includes newly tooled parts specific to the SAR role. The model accurately captures the distinctive appearance of the AB.205 while providing excellent opportunities for detailed painting and weathering. With a completed length of approximately 270mm, the finished model makes an impressive addition to any helicopter or rotary-wing aircraft collection.

The included decal sheet provides markings for six different aircraft, including examples operated by the Italian Army, the Arma dei Carabinieri and the United States Navy. These options allow modellers to depict a variety of operational aircraft serving in both military and rescue roles.

History

The Bell UH-1 Iroquois became one of the most important helicopters of the twentieth century and achieved legendary status through its extensive use during the Vietnam War. Its combination of simplicity, reliability and versatility made it ideal for a wide range of missions, leading to widespread adoption by military and civilian operators around the world.

In Italy, Agusta produced the helicopter under licence as the AB.205. The type served extensively with the Italian armed forces, emergency services and government organisations. Search and Rescue variants played an important role in locating and recovering personnel, supporting disaster relief operations and assisting communities during emergencies. The helicopter’s ability to operate from remote locations and carry rescue equipment ensured its continued usefulness for decades.

The AB.205 remains one of the most recognisable rotary-wing aircraft ever built and continues to be remembered as a highly capable and dependable helicopter that served countless military and humanitarian missions worldwide.
