The Italeri General Dynamics F-111A Aardvark is a detailed 1/72 scale model kit of one of the most technologically advanced strike aircraft of the Cold War. Combining high speed, long range and an impressive weapons payload, the F-111A introduced several innovative features that changed the way tactical strike aircraft were designed and operated.

The model accurately captures the aircraft’s distinctive variable-sweep wings, streamlined fuselage and side-by-side cockpit layout. Measuring approximately 31.1cm when completed, the kit includes decals for four different aircraft, allowing builders to represent several operational examples of this famous swing-wing bomber. Finely moulded surface detail and authentic external features make it an excellent addition to any modern military aircraft collection.

The real aircraft was designed to perform deep strike missions at both high and extremely low altitude. Its advanced terrain-following radar allowed it to fly automatically close to the ground, reducing the chance of detection while maintaining high speed. Combined with its powerful twin-engine performance and large weapons capacity, the F-111 became one of the most capable strike aircraft of its generation.

History

The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark entered service with the United States Air Force in the late 1960s and represented a major technological leap in military aviation. It combined variable-sweep wings, advanced avionics, terrain-following radar and a unique crew escape capsule into a single aircraft capable of flying at speeds exceeding Mach 2. The F-111 saw extensive service during the Vietnam War and later participated in operations over Libya, the Gulf War and other conflicts. Its ability to conduct long-range precision strikes at very low altitude made it one of the most effective tactical strike aircraft of the Cold War before its retirement in the late 1990s.
