The Italeri KC-135R/FR Stratotanker is a large 1/72 scale plastic model kit of the long-serving aerial refuelling aircraft. Derived from Boeing’s jet airliner designs, the KC-135 became an essential tanker for extending the operational range of bombers, fighters and attack aircraft.

The completed model measures approximately 58 cm and includes a detailed representation of the rigid flying boom mounted beneath the tail. Four underwing turbofan engines and the aircraft’s distinctive swept-wing configuration reproduce the imposing appearance of the full-size Stratotanker.

Decals are supplied for United States and French aircraft, providing two national finishing options. The combination of its large size, recognisable tanker equipment and detailed exterior makes the kit suitable as a standalone display model or as part of a wider post-war aviation collection.

History

The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker entered active service with the United States Air Force during the late 1950s. Its original mission was to refuel the long-range bombers of Strategic Air Command, providing the aerial endurance required for extended Cold War operations.

The aircraft uses a rigid flying boom positioned beneath the tail to transfer fuel to compatible receiver aircraft. Certain configurations can also carry two underwing pods equipped with flexible hose systems. With the ability to carry nearly 100,000 kg of fuel, the KC-135 significantly increases the range and endurance of the aircraft it supports.

Successive upgrades introduced improved systems and turbofan engines, allowing later versions to exceed 930 km/h. As its role expanded beyond supporting strategic bombers, the Stratotanker became an important asset for fighter, attack and transport operations. American and French aircraft have served on numerous missions, helping sustain air operations across considerable distances.
