History
The Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger I was introduced to address the growing need for a heavily armoured and heavily armed tank capable of engaging enemy armour at long range. Developed during the early years of the Second World War, it was designed to operate alongside existing German medium tanks, providing superior firepower and protection.
First deployed in late 1942 on the Eastern Front and shortly after in North Africa, the Tiger I quickly demonstrated its effectiveness. Its main weapon, the 88 mm KwK 36 L/56 gun, was capable of destroying enemy tanks at distances beyond the effective range of most opposing vehicles. Combined with thick armour plating, this made the Tiger I a formidable opponent on the battlefield.
Early production models, such as the version represented in this kit, were used in challenging environments including the harsh conditions of the Eastern Front and the deserts of North Africa. Despite its strengths, the tank was complex and resource-intensive to produce, which limited its numbers compared to other vehicles.
Even so, the Tiger I remains one of the most iconic tanks of the war, remembered for its powerful combination of armour and firepower. Its impact on armoured warfare and its recognisable design ensure its continued popularity among historians and modellers alike.
