History
In December 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, the US 101st Airborne Division was tasked with defending the strategic Belgian town of Bastogne. Surrounded by German forces, the division held its ground despite severe shortages of supplies, harsh winter weather, and continuous enemy pressure.
The defence of Bastogne became one of the most famous episodes of the campaign. The troops endured freezing temperatures, limited ammunition, and constant artillery bombardment while maintaining their defensive positions. Their resistance disrupted German plans and bought valuable time for Allied forces to regroup.
One of the defining moments of the battle came when the German forces demanded the surrender of the town, to which the American commander famously replied “Nuts!” The refusal symbolised the determination of the defenders and boosted morale.
The eventual arrival of relieving forces broke the siege, marking a turning point in the battle. The actions of the 101st Airborne at Bastogne remain a key example of resilience and determination during the Second World War.
