History
In December 1944, German forces launched a major offensive in the Ardennes region, known as the Battle of the Bulge. As part of this operation, German units advanced towards key strategic locations, including the town of Bastogne in Belgium.
The fighting around Bastogne became one of the central engagements of the campaign. German infantry, supported by armoured units, attempted to encircle and capture the town, facing determined resistance from Allied forces, including the US 101st Airborne Division.
Combat took place under extremely harsh winter conditions, with snow, freezing temperatures, and limited visibility affecting both sides. German troops had to operate in difficult terrain while maintaining supply lines during the advance.
The battle ultimately stalled, and the German offensive failed to achieve its objectives. The events at Bastogne remain a defining moment of the Second World War, illustrating the intensity and challenges of winter warfare on the Western Front.
