History
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 was developed as an improved high-performance variant of the famous Fw 190 fighter series. Nicknamed the “Dora”, the aircraft introduced the powerful Junkers Jumo 213 inline engine to improve altitude performance and combat capability against increasingly advanced Allied aircraft.
Early production D-9 aircraft entered service during the final stages of the Second World War and were used extensively in defence of Germany and on the Western Front. Despite the difficult conditions faced by the Luftwaffe in 1944 and 1945, the Dora proved to be one of Germany’s most effective piston-engined fighters.
Jagdgeschwader 54 “Grünherz”, recognised by its green heart emblem, operated numerous Fw 190 variants during the war. Originally famous for its service on the Eastern Front, the unit later operated advanced late-war aircraft including the Fw 190D series.
The Fw 190D-9 remains one of the most respected and visually distinctive Luftwaffe fighters of the Second World War due to its performance, aggressive appearance, and historical significance.
