History

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the heaviest and most powerful single-engine fighter aircraft of the Second World War. Designed in the United States, it was equipped with a robust airframe and a powerful radial engine, making it highly effective in both air combat and ground attack roles.

The D-22 variant featured improvements in performance and equipment, continuing the evolution of the Thunderbolt throughout the war. Its ability to absorb damage and continue flying made it particularly valued by pilots operating in hostile environments.

Following the liberation of France, the French Air Force began operating Thunderbolts supplied by the Allies. These aircraft were used in ground attack missions, supporting operations as Allied forces advanced across Europe. Even after the war, they remained in service for a period as part of rebuilding efforts.

The P-47 Thunderbolt remains one of the most recognisable aircraft of the era, representing strength, reliability, and versatility. Its use by multiple Allied nations highlights its importance as a key component of wartime air power.
