History

The Mercedes-Benz SSKL, short for Super-Sport-Kurz-Leicht, was developed as the ultimate version of the highly successful S-Series racing cars. Engineers reduced weight by drilling lightening holes throughout the chassis, an innovative and bold approach for the period. Combined with a massive 7.1-litre supercharged six-cylinder engine producing up to 300 horsepower, the result was one of the fastest and most capable racing cars of its era.

The SSKL achieved its most famous success in 1931 when Rudolf Caracciola won the Mille Miglia. Competing against strong Italian opposition on home soil, Caracciola became the first non-Italian driver to win the prestigious event. The victory remains one of the greatest achievements in pre-war motorsport and helped cement both the driver’s and the car’s legendary status.
