This military version of the iconic Beetle featured 4-wheel drive and was used by German officers and staff in various theatres during World War II. History

The Volkswagen Type 87 was a military adaptation of the civilian Beetle, equipped with 4-wheel drive from the Type 86 and a reinforced chassis for use in rough terrain. Only a small number were built between 1941 and 1944, mainly for use by German officers and staff in North Africa, the Eastern Front, and other challenging environments. Its combination of reliability, simplicity, and off-road capability made it a practical if unusual addition to the Wehrmacht’s transport fleet. The Type 87 remains a fascinating piece of WWII automotive history.
