History
The Douglas A-20 Havoc was one of the most widely used light bombers of the Second World War. Designed as a fast, twin-engine aircraft, it was employed in a range of roles including bombing, ground attack, and reconnaissance.
The A-20G variant was optimised for ground attack, replacing the glazed nose with a solid one housing multiple heavy machine guns. This made it particularly effective for low-level strikes against ground targets, where its speed and firepower could be fully utilised.
The aircraft saw extensive service in both the European and Pacific theatres. In Europe, it operated from bases in Britain, Italy, and later France, often flying in coordinated formations. In the Pacific, it proved especially effective, with both American and Australian units using it for aggressive low-level attacks.
The A-20’s adaptability and robust design ensured its continued use throughout the war, making it one of the most reliable and effective aircraft in its class.
