Special Hobby Aircraft Model Kit

Special Hobby De Havilland DH.94 Moth Minor (1/72) SH72538

The Special Hobby de Havilland DH.94 Moth Minor is a detailed 1/72 scale model kit of one of Britain’s most attractive light touring and training aircraft. Originally developed during the late 1930s, the Moth Minor was designed as an affordable two-seat monoplane for private owners, flying clubs and pilot training. Its simple construction, reliable performance and pleasant handling characteristics made it a popular aircraft both before and after the Second World War.

The outbreak of war brought significant changes to the aircraft’s role. Civil aviation activity was heavily restricted, and many Moth Minors were impressed into service as training and liaison aircraft. While production in Britain ceased, manufacturing continued in Australia to support Royal Australian Air Force requirements. The type also served in other roles, including one aircraft that operated with the United States Army Air Forces in Egypt during 1942.

This Special Hobby kit contains finely moulded plastic parts spread across two sprues together with clear injection-moulded windscreen components. The model captures the elegant lines of the aircraft and offers a selection of both military and civilian marking schemes. Included are the USAAF-operated “Sand Fly” aircraft from Egypt, the British-registered G-AFTH in both wartime camouflage and yellow RAF training markings, plus two colourful post-war civilian aircraft, G-AFOZ and G-AFPN.

The combination of military and civilian subjects makes this kit an excellent choice for aviation enthusiasts interested in both wartime support aircraft and classic British light aviation. The varied colour schemes also provide an attractive alternative to more conventional military aircraft projects.

History

The de Havilland DH.94 Moth Minor first flew in 1937 as a modern replacement for earlier light aircraft in the famous Moth family. Featuring a low-wing monoplane layout and enclosed cockpit, it represented a significant step forward in private aviation design. Before the war it was widely used by private pilots and flying clubs throughout Britain.

During the Second World War, many examples were adapted for military use as communications, training and liaison aircraft. Production was transferred to Australia, where the type continued serving military needs. Following the war, surplus aircraft returned to civilian ownership and remained popular throughout the 1950s, 1960s and beyond. Several restored examples continue to fly today, preserving the legacy of one of de Havilland’s most charming light aircraft designs.

This model kit requires assembly and painting. Glue, paints and tools are not included and must be purchased separately.
