Special Hobby Martin Baltimore Mk.I/II 1/48 Model Kit

Build an early wartime Martin Baltimore with the Special Hobby 1/48 Martin Baltimore Mk.I/II “First Version in Combat”. This detailed aircraft kit represents the first Baltimore variants to enter service, including the Mk.I and Mk.II used by the RAF during the Second World War.

The Martin Baltimore developed from the earlier Martin 167 design. Based on British operational experience and requirements, Martin created the more powerful Model 187, powered by two R-2600 engines. The four-seat aircraft could carry up to 1,800 kg of bombs and was heavily armed. The first examples arrived in Great Britain in October 1941.

Baltimore Mk.I and Mk.II

The first 100 aircraft, fitted with a single machine gun in the dorsal position, were designated Baltimore Mk.I. Later aircraft received a twin machine gun dorsal mount and became the Baltimore Mk.II. These early versions were used by the RAF in North Africa as attack bombers and for maritime patrol duties, and they played a significant role during the Battle of El Alamein.

Later Baltimore variants introduced powered turrets, but this kit focuses on the earlier Mk.I and Mk.II forms, making it an appealing project for modellers interested in RAF aircraft from the North African campaign.

Kit Contents and Marking Options

The model is divided across nine sprues, with additional details supplied on an etched fret. Decals provide markings for four different aircraft, giving you a choice of finishing options. Two of the included schemes feature desert camouflage, while the other two use naval camouflage.

The mix of plastic and etched components gives this 1/48 aircraft project plenty of detail, while the four marking choices provide useful variety at the painting and finishing stage.
