Special Hobby DH.98 Mosquito NF Mk.XV 1/72 Model Kit

Build an unusual high-altitude development of the famous DH.98 Mosquito with this finely detailed 1/72 scale kit from Special Hobby. The NF Mk.XV combined a pressurised cockpit, nose-mounted radar, extended wings and high-altitude Merlin engines to create a distinctive RAF night fighter.

Only a small batch of these aircraft, known as the “Fifteens”, was produced. They were assigned to No. 85 Squadron RAF for flight testing, making the NF Mk.XV a particularly focused subject for a collection of British experimental and operational aircraft from the Second World War.

Developed for High-Altitude Defence

The Mosquito NF Mk.XV emerged in response to high-altitude Luftwaffe activity over Great Britain. Junkers Ju 86P and Ju 86R reconnaissance and bomber aircraft initially operated beyond the RAF’s effective reach. High-altitude versions of the Spitfire Mk.VII and modified Spitfire Mk.IX helped change that situation, but the prospect of more powerful German bombers led to the development of a specialised Mosquito fighter.

This high-altitude version featured a pressurised cockpit for its crew and radar installed in the nose. Its extended wing had a span of 19 metres, while Merlin 76 high-altitude engines drove four-blade propellers. Together, these features gave the NF Mk.XV a noticeably different configuration from more familiar Mosquito variants.

Special Hobby presents the Mosquito NF Mk.XV as a styrene kit in 1/72 scale, bringing this particular version to the format for the first time. Its unusual combination of extended wings, four-blade propellers and high-altitude equipment makes it an eye-catching addition to a WWII 1/72 aircraft display.

The model offers a high level of detail and a clearly defined subject for builders who enjoy lesser-known variants. It can stand alone or complement other RAF fighters and Mosquito versions in a coordinated aircraft collection.

Two RAF Colour Schemes

The included decals provide marking choices for two NF Mk.XV aircraft. One is presented in PRU Blue, while the other features a Deep Blue finish. These contrasting schemes allow modellers to select the appearance that best suits their display.
