History
The Morane-Saulnier MS-406C.1 was developed in response to a 1934 French requirement for a modern monoplane fighter. It evolved from the earlier MS-405 design and became one of the most widely produced French fighters of its time, with over a thousand units built.
Powered by a Hispano-Suiza engine, the aircraft was armed with a 20mm cannon firing through the propeller hub and machine guns mounted in the wings. At the outbreak of the Second World War, it formed the backbone of the French fighter force.
Although capable, the MS-406C.1 was soon outclassed by more advanced fighters such as the later variants of the Messerschmitt Bf 109. Despite this, it saw widespread service in multiple theatres including France, North Africa, and Indochina, and was flown by pilots from several nations.
Following the fall of France, the aircraft continued to serve with various operators, including Finland, Switzerland, and other European forces. Its widespread use and adaptability ensured its place as a significant aircraft of the early war period.
