Special Hobby presents a new boxing of its acclaimed 1/32 scale Tempest Mk.V, now titled Doodle-bug Hunters. This edition commemorates the RAF’s efforts to intercept and destroy German V-1 flying bombs using the powerful Hawker Tempest aircraft. The kit includes four historically accurate marking options, with two featuring unique symbols representing shot-down V-1 rockets.

One standout highlight of this boxing is the inclusion of a 3D printed radar suite, comprising a wing-mounted antenna and a cockpit instrument specific to the ‘Radar Camo A’ version. This is the first Tempest kit to offer this configuration, delivering enhanced realism and accuracy for detail-oriented modellers.

History

The Hawker Tempest was one of the most powerful British fighters of the Second World War, emerging as an evolution of the earlier Typhoon. Its superior speed, firepower and low-level performance made it ideal for intercepting the German V-1 flying bombs, which targeted southern England in 1944. The Tempest’s role in this unique air defence operation led to numerous aerial victories against the unmanned rockets, often requiring exceptional flying skill to catch and tip or shoot them down before they reached populated areas.

The aircraft featured in this kit were part of those critical missions, and two of them wore nose art or markings to commemorate their success against the so-called ‘Doodle-bugs’. The addition of radar equipment, although experimental, reflects the RAF’s ongoing efforts to counter evolving threats. This boxing brings those historic efforts to life with accurate detailing and special components, perfect for aviation history enthusiasts and scale modellers alike.
