The Takom Project 1123 Moskva Class Aviation Cruiser is a highly detailed 1/350 scale model kit of one of the Soviet Navy’s most distinctive Cold War warships. Combining the firepower of a guided missile cruiser with the operational flexibility of a helicopter carrier, the Moskva Class represented a unique solution to the Soviet Union’s anti-submarine warfare requirements during the height of East-West naval competition.

Unlike traditional aircraft carriers, the Moskva Class was developed specifically to locate, track and engage NATO submarines. The design combined powerful missile armament with a large aft flight deck capable of operating multiple anti-submarine helicopters. This allowed the vessel to project its anti-submarine capabilities far beyond the range of shipboard sensors and weapons.

The unusual configuration resulted in a highly distinctive silhouette, with a heavily armed cruiser-style forward section and an expansive helicopter operating area aft. This blend of missile cruiser and aviation platform reflected Soviet naval doctrine of the period and provided valuable experience that would later influence the development of larger Soviet aviation ships.

This Takom kit offers the choice of building the vessel as a full-hull display model using the included display pedestals or as a waterline model suitable for naval dioramas. Clear parts and photo-etched components are included to enhance realism and capture the fine details of the ship’s structure, sensors and deck equipment. With a finished length of approximately 540mm, the completed model makes an impressive centrepiece for any naval collection.

History

The Project 1123 Moskva Class was developed during the 1960s as part of the Soviet Union’s efforts to counter the growing threat posed by NATO ballistic missile submarines. Soviet naval planners required a vessel capable of operating helicopters at sea while retaining substantial offensive and defensive armament. The result was the Moskva Class, a hybrid design unlike any contemporary Western warship.

Two ships of the class were completed, Moskva and Leningrad. Both served primarily with the Black Sea Fleet and undertook deployments throughout the Mediterranean during the Cold War. Their embarked helicopters provided anti-submarine patrol capability while the ships themselves carried missiles, guns and sophisticated sensor systems.

Although later Soviet carrier programmes evolved towards larger aviation ships, the Moskva Class played an important role in the development of Soviet naval aviation. Today, the class remains one of the most distinctive and recognisable warship designs of the Cold War era.
