This model recreates a 1.5 ton Russian cargo truck which played a crucial role in the Soviet war effort during WWII. Following the outbreak of hostilities with Germany, material shortages forced a redesign in 1941 to minimise metal use. Changes included removing the right headlight, replacing doors with canvas curtains, eliminating the front bumper and brakes, and altering the front fenders to a flattened profile. Floors and the rear cockpit panel were constructed from wood to further conserve steel. Despite these simplifications, the truck remained a reliable workhorse and around 300,000 were produced until 1949.

The Tamiya 1/48 scale kit faithfully replicates this wartime adaptation, with fine detailing such as realistic wood grain texture, simplified fittings and period-correct features. The inclusion of soldier figures enhances display potential, making it ideal for diorama settings that depict supply runs, troop transport or frontline logistics.
