History

HMS Exeter was a York-class heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy, launched in 1929 and commissioned in 1931. She gained fame during the early months of the Second World War for her role in the Battle of the River Plate, where she, along with HMS Ajax and HMS Achilles, engaged and damaged the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee. Although heavily damaged, Exeter’s bravery contributed to the scuttling of Graf Spee in Montevideo harbour.

Later in the war, HMS Exeter served in the East Indies but was eventually sunk during the Second Battle of the Java Sea in March 1942. Her story stands as a testament to Royal Navy resilience and commitment during the global conflict.
