Trumpeter 1/35 US Army AH-1W Super Cobra Attack Helicopter (Turned Exhaust) (05117)

This 1/35 scale kit from Trumpeter depicts the AH-1W Super Cobra equipped with the Turned Exhaust System (TES), a defensive upgrade designed to reduce the helicopter’s infrared signature and improve survivability in combat. The AH-1W is a twin-engine attack helicopter used extensively by the US Marine Corps for close air support and anti-armour missions.

The distinctive Turned Exhaust System redirects engine exhaust gases upward and outward, helping to disperse heat and reduce the helicopter’s visibility to infrared-guided missiles. This passive countermeasure, often seen on AH-1Ws deployed in high-threat theatres, is a key visual feature of the TES-equipped variant. The angled outlets at the rear of the engine nacelles make this version instantly recognisable.

This Trumpeter kit includes 10 sprues and over 380 parts, capturing the detail and complexity of the AH-1W with precision. The model features detailed rotor assemblies, cockpit instrumentation, and fuselage panels, along with the distinctive TES exhaust units. At 469mm in length with a rotor diameter of 419.5mm, this is a commanding presence in any 1/35 scale rotary-wing collection.

History:

The AH-1W Super Cobra is a twin-engine attack helicopter derived from the original AH-1 Huey Cobra. Entering service with the US Marine Corps in the 1980s, it played a central role in close air support missions across a wide range of conflicts. One of the key survivability enhancements introduced during its service life was the Turned Exhaust System (TES), which significantly reduced the aircraft’s heat signature. This modification allowed the AH-1W to operate more safely in environments with a high threat from infrared-guided missiles, improving its survivability and mission success rate. The Super Cobra served as a critical battlefield asset until being phased out in favour of the AH-1Z Viper.
