Reviews for Scale Model Shop Ltd.

The Vallejo Squidmar Colour Dark Skin Set (74.305) contains four model paints for creating darker skin tones on miniature figures. Featuring Northern Tan, Gut Red, Rich Brown and Blackwood, the set combines tan, red and brown colours for painting faces, hands, exposed skin and detailed character figures.

Vallejo Squidmar Colour Dark Skin Set – 4 Paints

The Vallejo Squidmar Colour Dark Skin Set (74.305) brings together four model paints for creating darker skin tones on miniature figures. Combining tan, red and brown colours, the set provides a focused selection for painting faces, hands, arms and other exposed skin on character miniatures.

Painting darker skin tones involves balancing the main skin colour with shadows, highlights and subtle variations in warmth. The combination of Northern Tan, Gut Red, Rich Brown and Blackwood offers several colour options for developing these effects, from deeper recessed areas to lighter facial details.

Four Squidmar Colour Paints Included

The Vallejo Dark Skin Set contains the following four paints:

  • Northern Tan (203) – Vallejo 74.203
  • Gut Red (215) – Vallejo 74.215
  • Rich Brown (240) – Vallejo 74.240
  • Blackwood (243) – Vallejo 74.243

Rich Brown and Blackwood provide brown colours for establishing depth and contrast. Northern Tan introduces a lighter skin-related colour, while Gut Red offers a red tone that can be incorporated into warmer areas and selected facial details.

Painting Darker Skin Tones

When painting darker complexions on miniatures, the relationship between the base colour, shadows and highlights helps define the shape of the figure. Brown tones can establish the main skin colour, with darker sections used to emphasise recessed details.

Lighter colours can be applied selectively to prominent features such as cheekbones, foreheads, knuckles and raised muscles. Red tones may also be introduced into a painting scheme to create subtle differences in warmth.

The four included paints allow these colour relationships to be developed using a consistent selection.

Faces, Hands and Exposed Skin

Faces are often among the most detailed areas of a miniature. Small changes in colour around the eyes, nose, mouth and cheeks can make sculpted features easier to distinguish.

The Dark Skin Set is also relevant to painting hands, arms, legs and other exposed areas. Using related colours across these surfaces helps maintain a consistent complexion while allowing the placement of highlights and shadows to reflect the shape of each feature.

Character and Figure Painting

The colour selection can be incorporated into historical, fantasy and other figure-painting projects featuring darker skin tones. It is particularly useful when a character has several exposed areas that need to share the same overall complexion.

For groups of figures, the same four colours can be used in different proportions to introduce variation between individual characters while retaining a related colour palette.

Part of the Vallejo Squidmar Colour Range

The Dark Skin Set is part of the Vallejo Squidmar Colour range. Each paint has its own colour name, number and manufacturer reference, making the individual colours easy to identify.
