History
During the Dark Ages, Ireland was divided into numerous rival kingdoms and tribal territories that frequently fought one another for land, influence, and resources. Irish warriors also launched raids across the Irish Sea against Roman Britain, Wales, Scotland, and later Saxon and Viking settlements.
Irish warfare relied heavily on mobility, surprise attacks, and skirmishing tactics. Most warriors fought lightly equipped with spears and javelins, allowing rapid movement across difficult terrain. In larger battles, however, shield walls and close combat formations could still be employed effectively.
The elite of Irish society included armoured nobles and chieftains who fought alongside their retainers and often wore mail armour and helmets. Irish Wolfhounds were also highly regarded and could be used during hunting and combat to disrupt enemy formations or attack mounted opponents.
Irish warriors and settlers influenced large areas of Britain and Scotland during the early medieval period, leaving a lasting cultural and military legacy across the British Isles.
