F-4C Phantom II Wild Weasel IV (1/48) SWS48-16

The Wild Weasel IV variant of the F-4C Phantom II was developed during the Vietnam War to counter increasingly deadly enemy surface-to-air missile threats. Based on the McDonnell Douglas F-4C, itself a USAF version of the Navy’s F-4B, this SEAD-configured aircraft was fitted with advanced radar homing and warning systems. Operated in pairs—hunter and killer—F-4C Wild Weasels were responsible for detecting enemy radar and launching precision strikes with AGM-45 Shrike and AGM-78 Standard missiles.

This Zoukei-Mura 1/48 scale kit replicates the unique features of the Wild Weasel IV variant in superb detail, including distinctive sensors, reinforced structures, and the specialised cockpit layout. Three historically accurate marking options are included for aircraft stationed in Thailand and West Germany during SEAD operations under the 67th and 81st Tactical Fighter Squadrons.

History

The F-4C Phantom II Wild Weasel IV was developed as the U.S. Air Force’s answer to increasingly sophisticated surface-to-air missile threats during the Vietnam War. Operating as part of the Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD) mission, the Wild Weasel IV aircraft were fitted with radar homing and warning (RHAW) systems and armed with AGM-45 and AGM-78 anti-radiation missiles. Crewed by exceptionally brave pilots and electronic warfare officers, these aircraft baited enemy radar systems into revealing their locations before launching counterattacks. The 67th TFS flew these Phantoms in Operation Linebacker II, while the 81st TFS later operated them from Spangdahlem AB in West Germany as part of NATO’s Cold War readiness. These F-4C Wild Weasels laid the groundwork for modern electronic warfare aircraft and are recognised for their pivotal role in SEAD tactics.
