History:

The F-4S Phantom II was the final operational version of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 series flown by the US Navy and Marine Corps. Developed in the late 1970s as an upgrade to the F-4J, the F-4S introduced major enhancements to avionics, flight controls, and airframe integrity. Most notably, it featured leading-edge slats that significantly improved manoeuvrability—addressing a long-standing criticism of the Phantom’s dogfighting ability.

With reinforced structures and anti-corrosion treatments, the F-4S was optimised for carrier-based operations. Avionics upgrades included the AN/APG-59 radar and enhanced electronic warfare capabilities, keeping it relevant against evolving threats. Powered by the same J79-GE-10 engines as its predecessor, the F-4S added smoke suppression and increased reliability.

Though it never saw major combat, the F-4S filled a critical transitional role between the ageing F-4 fleet and the newer F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet. Its operational life spanned Cold War hotspots, including airspace skirmishes like the Gulf of Sidra incident. Phased out by the late 1980s, the F-4S proved the Phantom’s enduring legacy through technological adaptability and robust performance. This kit is a tribute to one of the last warriors of the Phantom line.
