History:
The Kawasaki Ki-45 Kai Ko/Hei “Toryu” (Nick) was one of Japan’s most important twin-engine fighters of World War II, built to counter the growing threat of heavy bombers. Developed from the earlier Ki-45 Kai Tei variant, the Ko and Hei versions introduced modifications for night interception and anti-bomber roles. The Ko featured forward-firing armament, while the Hei incorporated oblique-firing cannons (Schräge Musik style) for attacking enemy bombers from below.
Equipped with Nakajima Ha-102 radial engines and heavily armed with a combination of 20mm and 37mm cannons, the Ki-45 proved a capable interceptor. The addition of radar systems in later aircraft improved their effectiveness in nocturnal operations.
Used extensively in defence of the Japanese home islands and throughout the Pacific theatre, the Ki-45 saw combat with notable units such as the 5th and 4th Sentai. Though often outnumbered and eventually outclassed by more advanced Allied aircraft, the Toryu remained a respected opponent due to its firepower and endurance.
Zoukei-Mura’s SWS14 kit allows builders to recreate either variant in 1/32 scale with remarkable detail, offering a rewarding project and a faithful tribute to one of Japan’s most iconic twin-engine warplanes.
