U.S. Mortar Carrier M21 (1/35)
This 1/35 scale U.S. Mortar Carrier M21 from Tamiya represents a specialised variant of the American half-track family developed during the Second World War. Designed to provide mobile indirect fire support, the M21 combined the versatility of the half-track chassis with the firepower of an 81mm mortar. The model captures the distinctive open-top layout and functional interior, offering a detailed representation suitable for display or diorama use.
The kit recreates the blocky and purposeful design of the M21, including the open fighting compartment and driver’s position. The mortar mounting system is represented with attention to detail, reflecting its ability to traverse across a wide firing arc. The front-wheel drive and tracked rear suspension are also faithfully depicted, highlighting the hybrid mobility that defined American half-tracks.

History
The M21 mortar carrier was developed as part of the United States Army’s efforts to enhance mobile fire support within mechanised units. Building on the proven half-track platform, the M21 was introduced in June 1943 and served as a means of delivering indirect fire while keeping pace with advancing armoured and infantry forces.
Unlike standard personnel carriers, the M21 was fitted with an 81mm mortar mounted within the rear compartment. This allowed it to provide rapid-response fire support directly from the vehicle. The mounting system enabled a wide arc of fire, allowing crews to adjust their aim without needing to reposition the entire vehicle. In addition to the mortar, the M21 carried a range of secondary weapons, including a heavy machine gun for defence.
The vehicle retained the core characteristics of the half-track design, with driven front wheels for steering and tracked rear suspension for improved traction. This combination allowed it to operate effectively on roads and moderately rough terrain, although it still faced limitations in muddy conditions. The M21 played a supporting role in various operations, contributing to the flexibility and effectiveness of mechanised units during the war.
Following the Second World War, vehicles like the M21 were gradually replaced by more advanced fully tracked armoured vehicles. However, the half-track series remains an important part of military history, representing a transitional stage in the development of modern armoured support vehicles.
