Vallejo Plastic Putty – Water-Based Model Filler
Vallejo Plastic Putty 70.401 is a light, fluid, water-based filler designed for correcting gaps, joints and fit defects on scale models and figures. Supplied in a convenient 20ml tube, it provides a practical way to deal with small imperfections during model assembly and surface preparation.
The putty dries to a matt white finish and can be primed or painted once dry. Its fluid consistency also allows it to be diluted for creating surface textures, including cast armour effects and rust.
Filling Gaps and Correcting Fit Defects
Small gaps between assembled components and areas where parts do not fit together cleanly can become particularly noticeable after painting. Vallejo Plastic Putty is intended for correcting these defects before the model reaches the priming and painting stages.
It can be used on scale model vehicles and figures, making it useful for filling visible joints, correcting minor assembly imperfections and preparing surfaces for subsequent finishing work.
The water-based formula and light consistency allow the filler to be placed where it is needed without requiring a separate mixing stage.
Application Methods
Vallejo Plastic Putty can be applied in several ways depending on the area being worked on:
- Directly from the tube: Apply the filler to gaps and areas requiring correction using the tube dispenser.
- With a brush: Useful for placing the fluid putty onto smaller areas and surface details.
- With a spatula: Allows the putty to be spread and worked into gaps or uneven areas.
Once the application has dried, the matt white surface can be covered with primer or paint as part of the normal model finishing process.
Creating Cast Armour and Rust Textures
As well as filling gaps, Vallejo Plastic Putty can be diluted to produce textured surfaces. This makes it useful for representing the rough appearance of cast armour or building up rust effects on scale model vehicles.
These applications give the putty a role beyond straightforward assembly corrections, particularly when adding surface variation to military vehicles and other suitable modelling subjects.
Preparing Models for Painting
The putty dries with a matt white finish that accepts subsequent priming and painting. This allows corrected joints and textured areas to be incorporated into the model’s overall finish.
